Pakistan is one of South Asia’s poorest countries, with over 60 percent of the population living on less than $2 a day. In 2009, more than two million people were displaced from the Swat district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), when the military launched a major operation against opposition groups. By mid-December, more than 11,000 people had been killed.
