Concern would like to thank the 1,000 runners and walkers who participated in the annual 4 Mile Run/Walk held inCentral Park on Saturday April 10. The event was an outstanding success. In a further demonstration once again that people of good will come through when it matters most, the event helped raise more than $100,000 for the earthquake victims in Haiti.
Participants were flanked on all sides by more than 100 volunteers who arrived early in the morning to register the runners, hand out water, and make sure that all of the necessary logistics were in place to make the day a success.
“We have seen a tremendous response from volunteers all over the Tri-State area” said Dara Burke, one of the chief organizers of the event. “These guys are so enthusiastic and willing to help – it’s a cold morning, but look at the number of people who gave up their Saturday to help Haiti!”
Haiti may have largely disappeared from the headlines, but the country’s needs are still huge. For Concern staff on the ground in Port-au-Prince, the current and most pressing matter is helping survivors cope with the imminent arrival of the rainy season, and the potentially deadly floods and mud slides it is expected to cause.
Thanks to the generous supporters of Concern—from entire families, individual runners and walkers, and start up teams to the most seasoned veterans. All showed up to support Concern’s work in the field and to raise much needed funds to support essential programs.
Congratulations to our winners!

A view of the amazing turnout for the annual run in Central Park. |
Brendan Donoghue was the first man to cross the finish line in 22 minutes and 49 seconds, while Victoria Booth, the first woman, crossed behind in a close 23 minutes and 17 seconds. Male runners-up were Michael Rodgers and Francis Donahue in the male category, with Dianne Kenna and Megan Hayes leading the women.
The coveted trophy for the largest bar team made its way back uptown to Doc Watsons, after enjoying a good home for the past year at the Mad Hatter Saloon. We’d like to express our appreciation to Doc Watsons which rallied support from all sides to create the largest bar team of the day. Congratulations also to the team from Credit Suisse whose 89 team members took the honors among regular teams and had great support from their sponsors.
Very special thanks to everyone who went the extra step to raise sponsorship – the money that makes Concern’s work on the ground possible
We would like to acknowledge with the most sincere thanks, the sponsors who helped ensure this event was a success. In particular, the staff at the East End Bar, Amity Hall, Urban Athletics, NYCRUNS.com, CentralPark.com and the NYC Parks Department.
Of course, no run would be complete without a special salute to John Volpe, our volunteer Race Director, for all of his hard work and expertise in delivering yet again, another day worthy of celebration.
Finally, an additional word of thanks to the volunteers and participants, along with their sponsors for making the Concern for Haiti Run/Walk the overwhelming success it was.
