Twestival Global is a global series of events organized by volunteers around the world under short timescales via Twitter to raise awareness of and rally support for a great cause. Motivated teams in hundreds of cities around the world organize events, and harness the power of Twitter to support the work and mission of an international nonprofit organization they independently recognize as outstanding.

The first Twestival Global launched on February 12, 2009, with events hosted in 202 cities around the world highlighting the work of the non-profit charity: water.

Through Twestival Global, over $250,000 were raised to help the organization fund programs that provide clean, safe water to communities in developing countries. Amanda Rose, founder and chief organizer of Twestival, commented, “Our hundreds of city organizers around the world are enthusiastic about hosting events on March 25, 2010, which will put a global spotlight on the great work that Concern does for education.”

This international Twitter “festival” is a movement that—although separate and independent from Twitter or the selected non-profit—demonstrates the growing power of Twitter as more than just a social networking tool—it has become an innovative and far-reaching technology that unites people around the world in support of a good cause. “Volunteers can sign up or register their city to participate in early 2010 via Twestival.com,” says Rose.

Scheduled for March 25, Twestival Global 2010 aims to make a difference for Concern’s education programs in the world’s poorest countries, with a particular emphasis on the most vulnerable, such as girls, orphans, child laborers, and those affected by conflict and HIV and AIDS. Participants will learn that a mere $28 is sufficient to supply one student with a uniform, pencils and notebooks for an entire school year. Concern has pledged that a full 100 percent of funds raised will be spent on its education initiatives. In the past year, Concern education programs benefitted more than 3.9 million people.

“An estimated 72 million children worldwide are not enrolled in school. Concern is committed to reaching those left behind and giving them access to learning and the chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. Twestival Global is revolutionizing the way concerned citizens all over the world connect to the poorest among us. We are thrilled to have been chosen, and we’re rolling up our sleeves to make the most of this opportunity,” said Chief Executive of Concern Worldwide, Tom Arnold.

“Education is a fundamental liberating force in the poorest countries. We are delighted to have the opportunity to participate in Twestival and reach more of the most vulnerable children,” added Executive Director of Concern Worldwide US, Siobhan Walsh.
