This month, Sylvia Wong, Education Officer for Concern Worldwide US, writes about her visit to the Future Kids School in the urban slum of Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya. The worst drought in 60 years and a record spike in food prices is currently affecting 3.5 million people in Kenya, and the urban poor are struggling to meet even the most basic needs for their survival.
The challenges and realities that children face living and going to school in the slums are clearly evident at Future Kids School. With support from Concern, this primary school was able to provide a strong learning environment for students despite the surrounding conditions and circumstances. Learn more about how the principal, Lydia, founded the school and why she thinks education is the key to survival in the slums.
Sylvia challenges you to “like” the Global Concerns Classroom Facebook page and join the growing community of teachers, students, and concerned citizens who are learning about global humanitarian issues and taking action to fight poverty. Once you join, you can watch a video of Kindergarten students singing their morning song at Future Kids School!
