Why are we in Haiti? Haiti is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, with over 96% of the population at risk. Haiti is also extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Concern has been working in Haiti since 1994, when we launched a response to Hurricane Gordon, and has since responded to over 15 major disasters in Haiti. Concern has been working in the metropolitan area of Port au Prince since 1996.

Needs and challenges in Haiti

With over 50 per cent of the population of 11 million people living in poverty, and 38% falling below the extreme poverty line of $2.15/day, Haiti continues to face daunting humanitarian and development challenges, including chronic food insecurity and malnutrition, low levels of education, poor sanitation, and inadequate infrastructure. For the first time, in 2022, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) stated that part of the Haitian population (19,000 people) were in a situation of famine.

These challenges are intensified and multiplied by the socio-political instability, the country’s extreme vulnerability to frequent natural disasters and to the effects of climate change and epidemics.

Latest achievements

Partnerships

We have four active partnerships with national organisations in Haiti. In 2022, over €500,000 were granted to these partners. Aside from registered organizations, we also collaborate with a number of community-based informal groups who take an active part in our programs.

Cholera response

The Haiti Ministry of Health and Population reported two confirmed cases of cholera in Port-au-Prince in October 2022. Concern launched a cholera prevention campaign with the support of our existing network of Community Health Workers, Community Facilitators and Protection Focal Points.

Protection

Concern’s approach focuses on improving awareness and responses to increasing protection needs. Support services to survivors of violence aim to address the effects of gender-based violence, in close collaboration with our women-led local partner Négès Mawon and IDEO.

What we do in Haiti

Our response in Haiti has adapted over the years, but our focus remains on improving living standards, economic status and social inclusion for the island nation's most vulnerable communities.
