Philanthropist and businessman Tom Moran, Mutual of America’s CEO and Board Chairman for Concern Worldwide US, was among the 10 recipients of this year’s Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for Irish Abroad.

The annual award, established by the Irish government after the 2011 Global Irish Economic Forum, recognizes those who have served Ireland with distinction and those who have actively contributed to Ireland in a sustained manner. Other recipients this year include actor and loyal Concern supporter Gabriel Byrne and author Mario Vargas Llosa.

“Over the years, Tom has developed relationships with social, political and business leaders in Northern Ireland and continues to open doors to promote a positive future for this island.”

Mr. Moran was singled out as a humanitarian, philanthropist and influential voice in the Irish peace process who has consistently championed reconciliation.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to these remarkable individuals for what each of them has contributed to Ireland, to the Irish abroad and to our country’s international reputation, said Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Charlie Flanagan in announcing the awards.

“Irish America has always played a crucial role in promoting and supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland. This year we are recognizing Tom Moran, a hugely successful businessman and noted philanthropist who has been an influential voice in the peace process,” Flanagan said. “Over the years, Tom has developed relationships with social, political and business leaders in Northern Ireland and continues to open doors to promote a positive future for this island. He has been a champion of reconciliation between the communities and I am delighted that his great work is being recognized.”

“For the past two decades, Tom has been the heart and soul of Concern Worldwide in the United States,” said Concern US’s CEO Joseph Cahalan. “One small gesture that speaks volumes: His business card reads Chairman, CEO and President, Mutual of America. Flip it over and it reads: Chairman, Concern Worldwide… He defines the word humanitarian.”

In addition to Mr. Moran, other recipients are Byrne (US), Llosa (Peru), Fr. Donal Doyle (Japan), Niall Fitzgerald (UK), Charles Handy (UK), Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan (Kenya), Fr. Brendan McBride (US), Maureen Murphy (US), and Gareth Peirce (UK).
